Poetics

George the Poet; a Genuine favourite. He's a very talented and powerful 21 year old urban poet, whose style combines politically conscious lyrics with witty asides. Drawing influence from his upbringing on a North London council estate, his Ugandan roots and his current studies in Politics, Psychology and Sociology at Cambridge University, to treat us to a mix of observations that are both intelligent and thought provoking.

In this track he delivers a rather scathing and insightful look at the current state of rap, coupled with a sad ode to contemporary opinions on poetry. It is definitely worth a few listens. Not just for the lyrical content, as it is also a great and classic sounding instrumental track from The Herbaliser.

We had him appear at the Relaxation Generation festival earlier this year, where his powerful lyrics, juxtaposed between two bass heavy live acts, caused quite a stir with the crowd. Expect great things to come from him.

Funky Fridays #9

Some modern Funk this week. Straight out of Bristol and featuring Dubstep producer Joker on the keys, this track has some serious party vibes. Get a groove on to this:

Funky Fridays #8

As serious Soul Funk groove on this one. With some appropriate lyrics for todays climate. Its the Valentine Brothers' 1982 track 'Money's Too Tight (To Mention)':

Simply Red covered this only 3 years later, using it as their debut single and did better in the charts with it. This original, as per usual with sampled classics, is better without a doubt.

Funky Fridays #6

Six Funky Fridays later and here we are, has been fun. This number is owed to the lovely Lauren Laverne who played a particularly funk induced set yesterday, fittingly so as it was warming up for the Kindness live show, who are no strangers to our favourite Friday genre.

If you ever get the chance to see George Clinton with Parliament & Funkadalic live, do it. Its too good for words.
Have a good weekend...
